The three most commonly performed bariatric operations in the US and internationally are Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, Roux Y Gastric Bypass and Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch. However, there are many more derivatives of these three operations, including, but not limited to: gastric banding, mini gastric bypass, loop DS (SADI/SIPS), Biliopancreatic Diversion/Scopinaro procedure and others. Some up and coming new metabolic operations, such as duodenojejunal bypass, ilial transposition may also may have an effect on vitamin, mineral and protein absorption. All of these variations may need different levels of supplementation. We are here to help you sift through the confusion and make it easy to find a right fit for you.
Common vitamin combinations do not adequately provide the recommended dosages of supplements needed for bariatric patients. Due to food intake restriction and changes in bowel absorption patterns, bariatric patients are recommended to increase their levels of supplementation to maintain their good health. Our bariatric vitamins, minerals and other supplements are formulated specifically to meet post-surgery maintenance needs and are based on the AACE/TOS/ASMBS Guidelines* and American Metabolic and Bariatric Society Guidelines**.

For patients who have had bariatric surgery, it is very important to consume a precise, high quality product since their absorption might be impaired. Whey Protein Isolate is much more pure than protein concentrate. It is composed of 90% of protein, whereas concentrate has only 30% – 80%. Isolate has virtually no lactose while in concentrate there is a significant amount of lactose. In many situations, bariatric surgery patients develop lactose intolerance, so protein isolate becomes the obvious choice for them. Our Whey Protein Isolate comes with sunflower lecithin rather then soy lecithin (which is both a potential allergen and may have increased estrogen levels). Sunflower lecithin is the only kind of lecithin that can be obtained chemical-free. Our unflavored Whey Protein Isolate can be added to your favorite drink, smoothie or food without having a major impact on the flavor you already enjoy.
Please consult the product labels or product pages on the website. And account for any additional requirements as outlined by your medical provider. To achieve the minimum levels recommended by ASMBS:
DS Complete Multivitamins– One tablet per day. For best results split the tablet in half and take first half in the morning and second half in the evening.
DS Elemental Calcium – Two tablets 3 times per day. CA citrate is recommended form of Calcium for bariatric patients. Calcium should be taken 2 hours apart from iron. Since our DS multivitamin chewable tablets contain iron – DS Calcium should be taken 2 hours from multivitamin intake.
DS Whey Protein Isolate – 30g per day is recommended as an addition to your food protein intake. You might need to supplement up to 100g of protein per day if your food protein intake is poor.
